We had quite the excitement yesterday as a fast moving storm with 80 - 90 mph winds approached us from the west. The tornado sirens were blaring! I went to the basement and turned on my weather band radio and listened until our county was off the danger list. My rain gauge only had 1/2" in it. I was really hoping for a soaking rain looking at the size of the storm on radar. A half inch of rain every 10 days is not going to turn our grass all green again. There wasn't any damage other than one large branch across the street in my neighborhood. My son 3 miles away lost power and part of town was without power. Mine flickered quite a few times but stayed on. I was just happy there wasn't any hail.

New project................
I sewed all of the blocks of what I am calling a baby quilt at this point because it would measure 36" x 48". The triangles are 6" finished. This is the layout I thought I would like. Then I saw pinwheel blocks on point with alternate plain squares on Pinterest and thought that was pretty neat. That would increase the size of this to approximately 51" x 68".I turned a few pieces to get this layout. I love zig zags.

Wow that was an exciting day! We had big storms here one day last week but it was more of a deluge instead of a wind event. After that rain the weeds went crazy!
Boy we are sure getting a lot of storms lately; that is scarey, Wanda.
Oh I love the zig zag setting too..so glad I made my SIL's
surprise gift quilt like that.. if I ever get to see him at Christmas!! S I G H ..
Hugs from afar Julierose
That front made it down here after midnight. Got a lightning strike close by... woke us up with a world silencing BOOM! Very little rain, but we won't know... how much since the weather station decided to quit this week. We have to order a new one, in the meantime, we will have to rely on the news or weather app on the phone for weather info. Still pretty green down here, lots more rain so far than last year... here. The pond is still nearly at the top... last year we were in a drought at this time.
I like your thought of a little space in the windmills. I do love the zig zags though—so much energy in those blues!
When I saw the weather radar, I knew you were in for it and said a prayer. I love the fabric for the quilt. The zig zags are fresh looking.
That alternating on-point trick is my favorite go-to when I need something to be larger. You could keep the pinwheels together, but set them on point and fill in the sides to make it half-again as big.
I'm always drawn to zig zag layouts. Very happy you had no damage. That had to be really scary.
Wow, I just read about this storm. I had never heard of what they called a wall of wind. Glad all is safe with you. This has really been a strange weather year.
LOL -- you have one idea in mind but first! just try this layout to see how they look . . . this may not take as long as the churn dashes but I'll bet you'll try a few arrangements. The storm barreled in at 4 p.m. and the sun was out at 6 p.m. Not much wind (good) and not much rain (bad). A friend in Lombard posted photos of trees down in their neighborhood, including in their driveway (blocking the garage door).
So glad to hear that you didn't have massive damage from the derecho. I absolutely love these blue and white layouts with the MD fabrics - I like the zig zag better than the pinwheels (personal preference).
Glad you had no damage. We've been teased with promises of rain, too. Ah, Summertime. I'm ready for fall!
I do love to see you playing with fabric. So many options and each more beautiful than the last.
Excitement for Wanda...safe excitement TBTG
Thanks for letting us know that you safely made it through the storm. It sounded super scary, Wanda! What a nice quilt you will have once these pieces are sewn together. Have fun deciding on the block layout!
So glad to hear you're safe with the weird weather everywhere - and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with all of those triangle squares - ;))
I love the zigzag layout. That storm sounds scary. Glad you were safe.
It's crazy weather everywhere, I a m glad you're safe! I love the pinwheel setting and with the color combo it's going to look fabulous!!
I'm glad you didn't get any damage from this storm, we just got power back Friday afternoon, other areas will not get it restored until next week. So glad there was not (so far anyway) super hot and humid weather for cleanup work.
