I entered a drawing on Victoria Findlay Wolfe's blog for a fat quarter pack of her new fabric line and I won! Check out this post on her blog to see her using some of these fabrics.
I have Victoria's Double Wedding Ring book published by C&T. I never have wanted to make a double wedding ring quilt after trying it out with Mary Ellen Hopkin's method way back in the 1980s. However.................
there is one quilt in there that I really love. I need to do some more thinking about the fabric selection before I start working on it.
There is a pullout section with full size patterns on it. This is paper pieced and that is legal size paper so you can see how big the sections are.
This is as far as I got on the project I am going to work on. I cut ninety-nine 6.5" squares with my Studio die cutter and did some pairing of strips. Hopefully I can sew some today. It is an idea I have wanted to play with for a long time.
When I was outside yesterday afternoon I noticed the 2 tone pattern on the Elephant Ear leaves. I hadn't seen that when it was smaller.
I think maybe I need to plant it in a larger pot next year for it to get taller.
The other Elephant Ear is a little taller but not as tall as I thought it would get.
Well done on your win. That quilt you fancy making sure looks intricate. I love the batiks on your next project and will be following along with your progress.
ReplyDeleteThose veins on the elephant leaves look like you painted them on :) Maybe the 2nd one would have grown bigger if it had been planted in the ground, but I can understand why you would want to keep it in a pot - a lot easier to put in another place! We have sun today, it's very warm and no breeze. Glad I got all my cleaning done yesterday, ready for a quick visit today from my brother/wife before they go on the ferry from Hull to Holland/Europe for 6 weeks. They used to go via Dover but it's getting dangerous now, for passengers coming back home, as some illegals have started blocking the road into the Dover port, making you stop and demanding money or whatever :(
Congrats on the win! It is always fun to win fabric and quilting books that inspire you.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest putting the elephant ears in the ground also, but I know that where you live you would have to dig them up each fall.
Congrats on the win! I really like the second elephant ear!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Have fun with the fabric.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Can't wait to see what you do with the fabric, I am sure it will be fantastic.
ReplyDeleteAwesome!!! Glad to see someone I know win!!
ReplyDeleteGood morning Wanda.....Pot size plays a large part in determining how large your plants grow. The same is true with the koi in the pond. When my 25 Koi mysteriously disappeared 3 years ago, we received 3 koi from a grandson, and they have surpassed the size of the ones we had for 13 years.
ReplyDeleteIsn't is fun to win something? It's been a couple of years since I've won anything, but I keep on trying.
Enjoy your day. I will be in the pond cleaning out the dead leaves from the plants and moving the pots to the bottom before the water gets too cold for me to walk around in it.
Congratulations!
ReplyDelete(Now I'm curious to know how MEH interpreted DWR.)
that's neat I won one of her drawings several years ago before she had her line and she was generous with what she sent. That pattern looks interesting - I have made two traditional double wedding rings but I do not think I would make a traditional again.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the win. Love the fabric. I saw the most amazing Elephant Ears yesterday. Larger than I have ever seen and PURPLE. They were amazing. I plant mine in the ground and consider them annuals. You know I live just to the west of you and hate that they cannot survive our winters and I'm too lazy to dig them up every year. That's why I don't plant Canna too.

Those fabrics look like a lot of fun. That pattern in Victoria's book is my favorite one also. I will enjoy watching what you do with it.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on winning the FQ bundle. I love that two-tone elephant ear - if your photo were printed on fabric, it looks like it could be part of a Kaffe Fasset print. Looking forward to seeing your new project progress.
ReplyDeleteIt's always fun to win something especially fabric!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see your version of a double wedding ring. I think you would do an amazing job.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on that score! Odds are if I keep entering I'm bound to win something too :o))
ReplyDeleteThe pattern you've chosen looks very complex & I can't wait to see your Wanda spin on it

Congrats on winning the fat quarters. So much fun to win something, just for you. I saw that wedding ring book---quite a lot of variety in the blocks. The one you chose will be an interesting, depending on your colors. I used to take care of indoor office "gardens" during a summer job. They will take up what space they are given. They did have trouble during the winter hours, when the atrium doors kept being opened by customers. The temp change was hard on them at the beginning and end of each season. We have many in the jungle section of the Henry Doorley Zoo. They are placed in different areas & have grown where allowed.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great win! Bright Lights, Big City is my favourite one in Victoria's book and the one I should like to make most of all, I love the size of the pattern pieces!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your win! I love the stripes on Victoria's fabrics, and have bought some of them. And I'm pretty crazy about Victoria and a lot of what she makes. I've been following her blog for quite some time, and I got a chance to meet her and take a class from her at QuiltCon in Pasadena in February. She's a lot of fun and not at all pretentious. Very sweet and approachable; encouraging as a teacher. I'm really excited that you're going to make a quilt using one of her patterns! I have that book as well, but I don't know when I'll be ready to tackle one of the DWR quilts. I'd really like to, but they seem quite overwhelming and there are so many quilts I'll probably choose to make before I try to make one of those!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your win. I also have the VFW book and her templates. I did her DWR class at the Australasian Quilt Convention in Melbourne this year and completed the quilt ( like Forever Garden on page 11) in time for the Canberra Quilters exhibition in August. I am now working on my second DWR quilt as part of a design group I belong to.
ReplyDeleteI always like to see what is happening in your garden - being in Australia everything is the opposite & I don't have to deal with the cold weather or the humidity you have. It gets below freezing here, but no snow and little humidity in my part of Australia (Queanbeyan).
Conrats on a fabric win! My favorite kind of prize! I wanted to ask you about the kind of fabric cutting machine you use. You mention it once in a while and was wondering what it is and if you are happy with it or would you get a different one?
ReplyDeleteOoh, lucky you! What a nice win. I may have entered that one too.
ReplyDeleteNice book and I like that quilt although I don't always like paper piecing or at least the removing of paper.
I'm going to like your next quilt with those batiks. You never seem to tire!
