A chocolate soda to go............

My granddaughter and great-grandson were in town for a visit yesterday.  We spent the morning at my house and then we went to lunch (with my other granddaughter who had a birthday yesterday and my son) at my favorite restaurant.  Then we walked around the corner to the second favorite place and I got a chocolate soda to go.  I was surprised how many people I talk to who don't know what an ice cream soda is.  I come from the time period of soda fountains in the drugstores and this was always my favorite.  Now very few places around here make sodas.
I was the winner of the last day drawing last week at Vicki Welsh's blog.  The prize was 4 yards of beautiful hand dyed fabric (these are 2 yards each, 1 yard of each showing in the photo) and 10 yards of Mistyfuse.  You might want to follow her blog and maybe you will win some fabric sometime.  She has lots of great links to tutorials and has a shop where she sells the hand dyed fabric as well as hand made soap and glass items.  She has just created a new website that includes all of it.

I have been looking at this Viburnum bloom from my kitchen window and finally went out to take a photo of it.  There is always just one branch that has the blooms on it.

  1. I grew up with mom and pop ice cream stands that made all sorts of drinks. My favorite was a root beer float. They would keep the ice coated glasses in a freezer until they used them for the float.

Great fabric from VIcki. I have to get some of her fabric cut up into a quilt. So hard to cut into it.

  2. I love Ice Cream soda. And you are right, most people don't what they are. But growing up,we used to get them at the ice cream shops. Now most people only know about milk shakes.

  3. You won the fabric I was trying to win LOL - I put in every day for the chance - congrats - I'm sure you will make something beautiful with it.
I never had a chocolate soda when I was growing up - Are they like rootbeer floats just a different flavor - that was a nice treat in the middle of the summer.

  7. Weren't those soda fountains the best? I remember we used to get a "suicide" which had a bit of everything in it. It sounds pretty awful now, but we loved it back then.

  9. I think around here we call them ice cream floats. A good one is vanilla ice cream with Orange Crush!

Lucky you to win the hand-dyes! I don't always remember to enter to win, but I will now!

  10. I haven't had a good ice cream soda in over 40 years. The last one was in a soda fountain in the drug store my aunt worked in. I tried at a local soda fountain, but always missed the one person able to do the sodas correctly. They are a treat and definitely worth getting.

  12. My mom loved ice cream sodas; me, not so much. I've never been a fan of fizzy water so I'd get a sundae when she got a soda.

  14. We could get hold of ice cream sodas in the UK when I was a youngster - probably the same era as yourself!

  15. One of the things that attracted DH and me to our current location was the quaint downtown with a drugstore fountain. We visited it MANY times during each vacation before finally moving here. They served ice cream sodas in tall, ribbed clear glass vessels with tons of whipped cream and 2 cherries. Heaven! Alas, just a few years after we relocated, the drugstore succumbed to "modernization". Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Congrats on winning Vicki's fabric. I love it, too, but promised DH I won't buy until I make a dent in my stash :). Can't wait to see what you do with it! mtlakequilter at gmail dot com

  16. Yes, I love chocolate sodas. I think you add club soda to chocolate syrup and then add scoops of vanilla ice cream topping it off with more club soda. At least that is how the drugstores in St. Louis made them. I have continued making them for myself at home. Down here we eat a great deal of concretes, which is another name for DQ blizzards. Lucky you for winning the fabric!!
