Medallion auditions............

The 2 side borders are sewn on to the Medallion quilt center, the other 2 just up on the design wall.

I tried four different corner treatments. Upper right, a square of a purple print fabric, bottom right a pinwheel that is too small but I thought maybe I could see if it would work.  Bottom left, a 9 patch, and top left a paw.  While standing next to it I thought the paw was the right choice, but after seeing it on the computer I'm liking the 9 patch better.   I could also try a 4 patch with 2 of the squares purple continuing the the line of purple corner blocks from the center.

The temperature Saturday was in the mid 30s with flurries at times and high winds.  Sunday was 73 degrees and sunshine and also quite windy in the afternoon.  Today will struggle to reach 40.  They are predicting a couple cold weeks to start April.  I just hope we don't get a freeze when the Redbud trees are trying to bloom.

  1. I like the nine patch block: it echoes the "solid" centers of the paws in the medallion itself. The paw on the upper left looks out of place and half finished, but might look more unified if it were made of the colors of the nine patch?

  2. Of the options shown, I definitely prefer the 9-patch. The 4-patch with purple squares you described sounds like a great corner finish. Looking forward to seeing what you decide.

  3. Four inches of snow in Buffalo and 26 degrees. My poor daffodils are flattened and frozen. I also like the nine patch corners. Beautiful quilt so far,

  4. I like the darkness of the purple in the top right, but the 9-patch seems like the right amount of busy. So, a 9-patch that incorporates dark purple, maybe?

  5. I like adding the purple to the corners.... too, either in the 4 patch or the Bear Paw. The red bud down here is nearly done!!! and most of the plants have leaves... or are in the process of putting out leaves. Going to miss the spring!

  6. I think we're all just drawn to the color of the 9-patch. The paw in reds or purples could work, but how about a 9-patch with the proportions of the paw center; i.e. narrower center cross.

  8. Nine patches . . . I like how it plays with the rest of the layout!

  9. I really like the bear paw best. Obviously I am in the minority since I read the other comments....but I liked it when I first saw it.

  10. The 9 patch blends in and works, but the bear paw is what looks best to me. it carries on designs from the center of the quilt. No wrong or right with either just what my eyes tell me.

  11. Nice borders. I like the paw, but would like to see what it looks like with the darks and lights reversed.

  12. You have gotten a lot done Friday, Saturday, and Sunday! The Hexagon quilt top is lovely and the medallion quilt is turning out great! I started snowing here on Saturday evening and most of the snow was gone by mid-afternoon on Sunday. It was very windy here too.

  13. I am voting on this one. I like the dark right upper corner because of what it does to the purple inner border. When I click on the photo to see it bigger I am not so crazy about the fabric chosen but I would investigate more darks to see how they work with the borders.

  14. The purple bear paw first drew my attention and I liked it, but then I realized that it draws attention away from the center, which is what I assume you would want to be the focus, so something more subtle would probably be more appropriate. BUT, it depends (and maybe I missed this) on whether this is the last rotation or if you are going to add more rows and how the darker colors will relate to those.

  15. our redbud has a few blossoms still on it - spring here but our normal last chance for a freeze is the 3rd week of April - so far it looks like it will be ok - we will see - anything seems possible this year - in the meantime I will enjoy the 70's this week

  16. I like the Bears Paw. I think the purple ties in the border AND ties in the spiky border too.

  17. The cornerstones on the earlier rows seems to draw your attention "up" to the next row without really being a focal point. If you could replicate that in this row, I think it would be "nice." But I think the bear paw in the reds would draw the eye a bit more "up" and continue the thought of the earlier bear paws. You always have such great ideas that it will be splendid whatever you do.

  19. I like the Bear Paw the best of all, could the background fabric be more creamy perhaps? Second choice the nine patch.

  20. Love your exuberant medallion. I think I prefer the bear paw, and the 9-patch is my second choice. The purple alone is too dark and the pin-wheel, too small.
The weather is crazy and changeable down here, too. We've had freezes several nights, and the weather app on my phone keeps buzzing with freeze warnings. As I don't garden, there's nothing much I can or need to do about an upcoming freeze, so it's a bit annoying, but otherwise, I like the app. I'm sure glad I'm not far enough north to worry about getting any more snow, I hope. Fingers crossed.
