I started working on the spiky border and decided I need more variety of fabrics.
I definitely like the lighter and brighter fabric in there. I think some of spikes will have to be rose color as well as red/purple. I already had enough purple cut so I'll have some spikes left over to use in another project.
Meanwhile on the other medallion I am auditioning the plain border and whether a checkerboard would be a good border to follow it. I think a border with triangles would be too busy. I might make the checkerboard out of just 2 fabrics instead of scrappy. Lots of decisions here.
How are the spikes pieced? Paper pieced. I just cannot imagine piecing two diagonals into such a clean rectangle that lays flat. Love the spikes. Agree they would be too much for the other medallion unless they were rows away. The decisions are what drive me crazy as I think the right one eludes me.
Will 'tune in tomorrow' to see how you advanced your design thoughts on these two pieces. Must tell you your vivid fabrics make our gloomy day brighter. The weather kids tell us we're to get 6 " of snow today. Seems when ever they broadcast a severe storm to hit it usually misses us... and that is o.k. with me.

Lol, I hate to go against the flow, but I like the all purple spikes better. The rose ones distract my eye from the center block, and I love the center block!
Both of your medallion quilts are showing great promise! The spiky border is lots of fun - and I agree that some variety in color, adding the lighter rose/pink, was a great idea. On the second quilt, the low volume border is a nice breather and the checkerboard border will also be less intense than what has come before, I think and hope. The center is quite intense. I'll look forward to what's next.
I like the way those slightly different spikes add variety to your blocks. Always fun to watch the process.
