Hopefully I can clear up some confusion about a facing, especially for the NO REPLY commenters that I can't respond to.
A facing is sewn on just like a binding.
After sewing the strip on, press it out away from the quilt and edge stitch about an eighth of an inch from the seam line through the facing strip and the seam allowance.
Then press the entire strip to the back of the quilt. The edge stitching makes the pressing easier and gives a nice crisp edge.
This finishes the quilt without a "frame" of binding. I hand stitch the facings in place on the back. Corners can be done many ways and I'm not getting into that here. A binding would be distracting on this banner so the facing was the best choice of edge finish.
Your explanations are always so clear - Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWill it be possible to put up a picture of the banner?

Very good and simple explanation. can't wait to see the finish....you have worked very hard to get this one done so quickly!
ReplyDeleteIt will look fantastic when its hung!!!! We'll all be looking for pictures of it hanging!!!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the finished banner!
ReplyDeleteI always forget about the edge stitching. Since I will be stitching the facing binding on my t-shirt quilt today, I will now remember to do that edge stitching! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis way of finishing the edge reminds me of sewing armhole or neck facings in garments.
ReplyDeleteYour explanation is so very clear - and it's the perfect solution for this banner.
ReplyDeleteWhen I used to make my tops, I edge stitched the facings too. I wondered why you would use a facing instead of binding the quilt, but now I understand. We are all waiting to see this quilt.
ReplyDeleteYou are so patient! I would just say to heck with all the "no reply" commenters after all the times you've explained that you cannot reply unless they have included their email addresses. You are a much better person than I am ❤️ Good for you! And thanks for the clear explanation, as always.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. Sometimes binding are just not right and this solves the problem. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThank you Wanda. You explanations are always so clear and understandable, even for a muddler like me!
ReplyDeleteThat does make a nice finish.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder about a finishing technique I have yet to use. I also am anxious for the final reveal!
ReplyDeleteThis expiation for some reason was easier for me to understand. Thank you. I love this fabric and pattern, what are they called?
ReplyDeleteGreat explanation Wanda...Thx for my oversized...tip and about the Candy thing...so perfect.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this! I know about facings from sewing clothing and did not realize you could put them on a quilt!
