On the trays on the left are the size rectangles I'm usually working with on my colorwash pieces. The ones on the right are for the new project.
Here are the 2 sizes side by side. It all started when a friend mentioned she could visualize one of my colorwash wallhangings on the large empty wall at her church. When she mentioned how large she thought it should be I really didn't think I wanted to make it. The second time she called I told her I was thinking I just needed to use larger rectangles and then it wouldn't be any more pieces than I use on my other colorwash wallhangings.
I started it Saturday afternoon thinking I would just get the center up and do a little more on it each day. Six hours later I had about 3/4 of it designed. It is almost covering 2 design walls (96" wide, 84" tall). Yesterday I spent an additional 5 hours filling in the last pieces which meant more cutting for the colors and values I was missing in my initial 3 days of cutting. The tweaking took about 3 hours. By 9 p.m. I was ready to sew and got the bottom 6 rows sewn (not shown here). The bottom here is the left side of the wallhanging. My personal challenge was to get the cutting and designing done and have the rows safely off the wall in stacks ready to sew by the 20th when my art quilters will be coming. Now I hope I will have it all sewn together by then. It will shrink in 11" in width and 7" in length when sewn. It is projected to be 69" x 90" when the top is finished.

Gorgeous just simply gorgeous. Chris
You have been such energized to accomplish this much so quickly! Again it is an amazing work that will bring a lot of joy to all who get to see it.
it really is gorgeous!
I love it! I think this one is my favourite, out of your recent colour wash quilts. Just beautiful.
Amazing that you accomplished so much in such a short time! It's so beautiful and will be an inspiration to all when it is hanging in the church. You should be very proud of all you've accomplished Wanda.
Wow, Wanda! That is amazing! I can just imagine walking into a church sanctuary and seeing all that color "greeting" me! It's a testimony to your talent and creativity.
Oh, wow!
Beautiful. So beautiful. How do you decide what colors you are going to lead into? Alice. Alvgoreaynycapdotrrdotcom

Another beautiful piece!
Making this bigger has only enhanced the beauty and magnified the power of the color wash. I can't even imagine how this looks in person, it must just bowl you over in its impact.

It is beautiful.
Wanda, you continually amaze me with your talent, creativity and output! Unbelievable that you got all that done so quickly. I'd still be trying to figure out what fabrics to use. LOL! That's why I love you. Or at least one of the reasons.
Your color wash designs are ALWAYS perfect and stunning. Just brightened my day !

Beautiful! Job well done..
OK Wanda....you know.......my heart is going pitter patter! This will be a beautiful addition to their church!
So very pretty! Fitting for a church, too--looks like "light of the world" to me!
This is going to be just perfect on a church wall - it glows. Stunning.
Oh my! This is stunning! And amazingly fast! I really love the way you're able to make the illusion of a hole or a shining center. It's so brilliant, and to think its accomplished "merely" by using pale or lightly colored fabric pieces.
I'm fairly sure I would be so reluctant to use such pale fabrics - because the individual pieces would look so boring! - that I'd never be able to accomplish that. I KNOW I'd never have discovered it, because it would've never occurred to me to move in that direction.
This is wonderful! As in full of wonder. Perfect for a church. I think the larger pieces seem to make a smoother transition for the "wash" effect.
Boy, am I glad I made that second phone call!
Wanda, This breathtaking banner deserves a name. I was thinking "In the beginning" but "light of the world" as lvkwilt suggested, seems so much more fitting:
John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
At what point might you add a label?
