In a couple of Kaffe's books he inserted a center square or rectangle of either a large print fabric or an applique. I thought I would play around with that idea. If you go back to this post and click twice on the photo of the book pages, the top book shows one of them. I have this print in 5 colors but thought the green background might be best. The orange background might be nice too.
This is one of Phil Jacobs newer prints of a basket of fruit. I just ordered a piece of it in more multicolor which I think might be better.
Now I have finished filling in the bottom row of the previous photos and added one more row below that. I have this print with pink and rust backgrounds too and haven't tried them yet.
There would be one or two borders around the panel to make it fit. I also have the option of putting the bottom row at the top so the panel would be centered instead of where it is.
This is so much prettier in real life. With both red and green in it, the camera has a hard time getting it right.
a totally personal rejection of the insert: I dislike "afterthought" additions, especially when they introduce a directional aspect. It might be interesting if added in the lower right quadrant; now, don't ask me why!!!!
ReplyDeleteI, personally, like the idea. But I'm wondering if it shouldn't be a bit bigger. Perhaps when you get a border on, if you decide to use one, it will accomplish that. Just my thoughts. Sally
ReplyDeleteI don't think the square will look like an afterthought when it is bordered and no white (design wall) is showing through. Looks great to me.
ReplyDeleteGood morning Wanda...I like the idea, especially the first 2 inserts, and I've seen the Phil Jacobs print online, and agree that a different color combo would make a big difference. Enjoy the day.
ReplyDeleteI really like the top "blue vase" insert, but I do wish the design were larger. I wonder if you could take four of the vases and create a center panel with them all pointing to (or away from) the center. I personally would like a thin solid color border around the inset.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. I love learning from your process. I definitely like the third choice with borders. Otherwise I think the eye has to work too hard to focus on any single block.
ReplyDeleteThat is a really interesting idea. I would probably put it off center, but I can't wait to see what you do with it.
ReplyDeleteThe only comment I can make is that I am in awe of your talent of making the most interesting beautiful quilts. I am sure this quilt will be awesome !
ReplyDeleteI really like the insert, especially once I realized it didn't have a white border! And, like several, others above, personally, I'd put it off-center.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of making it into a sort of medallion quilt. I would wait and see how the fabric you just ordered looks. all of your quilts are SO beautiful! I love your blog.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it fun to see where it will take you? I know I'm enjoying the ride!
ReplyDeleteI like the insert idea, especially the third option. It does make me wonder what it would look like if the insert border was made of tiny snowball blocks. I'm thinking of them being made with the border fabric you have showing as the background (triangle) fabric and the centers made from various prints already in your quilt.
ReplyDeleteI can see you are having fun with selecting your center piece for this lively quilt top. I always look forward to your final selection after you show several options.

It's an interesting idea. Personally I like the Phil Jacobs print the best, though of course things sometimes look quite different in person than on the computer. It will be fun to see how it turns out!
ReplyDeleteYES! YES! YES! I am beyond in love with this idea! Thanks for being so willing to share your creativity with us!
