A friend gave me a squirrel baffle for the last feeder that they could get into......didn't work, did it? I knew it would keep them from jumping from the tree to the feeder but wasn't sure if they could climb this taller shepherd's hook. I guess I grease the pole next.
The cookies are baked, the art quilters are coming. It is going to be a great day.
Since I live among the trees the squirrels and chipmunks are everywhere. Fortunately I have a feeder that the squirrels can't get into but they try at least once before they give up. When I lived in town an decade or so ago I had a deck and put the feeder in the middle of the deck with a baffle like you have and they couldn't get up the pole. You have some very smart squirrels.
enjoy today.... be happy that you only have squirrels... over here there are bears too!!! Trust me... the baffle won't work on the bears either. Have you considered a new weight sensitive feeder? They close the feed ports when a squirrel tries to perch and feed.
with my feeder right out from the window near the quilting room I can see those pesky squirrels try their best to get up the skinny metal poles. I have also had the baffle like you show - not often but I see them get up to the skinny pole. Also they will manage to get above the baffle when I have the feeder in a tree and come down from the top and hand by their toes to get down to the food. They are persistent. Some that are squirrel proof - proof not to be when they finally knock them out of the tree and start to drag them around until they break.
We stopped the squirrels from raiding our feeder by switching to a bird food mix that had safflower seeds instead of sunflower seeds. all of the birds continued to come to the feeder but the squirrels stayed away. Alas, they still took the peanuts we left out for the blue jays.
It's really funny to read about, but I know how frustrating it can be. We finally had to give up feeding completely because of the bears. Makes me sad.
We watch our squirrels make the long leap from the tree branch to our very tall bird feeder. If they are willing to risk life and limb, we feel they deserve a little bit of the food also. And there's not many nut trees in the neighborhood anymore, so what is there for them to eat?
A few years ago, before my back surgery, watching the squirrels in our yard took my mind off my pain. I have a special place in my heart for these entertainers who made me smile and forget my troubles for a few minutes.
I love the star quilt. The colors, the border, the red squares... it all works together perfectly.
But I did see feeders that have a battery operated bottom. When the squirrel jumps on the perches start spinning...Now THAT's entertainment. At a rather expensive cost..about $100. We'll tough it out.
some people get aggravated by squirrels and some are entertained by their antics. I am in the latter camp. I love watching how they will not give up until the goal is met. something I need to learn to get those UFOs done!
ps at the old apartment we lived at the squirrels did a high wire walk down the electrical wires to get up the street while traffic was moving below. little buggars.fun to watch so I didn't mind feeding them a bit. :-)
My husband outfitted two of my feeder poles (skinny like yourds) with a 20" piece of stove pipe. In the last five years, there's been only one successful, and very acrobatic, squirrel. I tried greasing the pole too, that works for a while, then it gets tacky.
Have fun today. The squirrels can be pesky.
ReplyDeleteSquirrels are so tenacious, I am not sure anything will stop them.

ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how smart and determined these little critters can be.

ReplyDeleteThose squirrels are tricky little critters aren't they?
ReplyDeleteTry a Twirl-a-Squirrel. It's great fun to watch, too. Once the squirrels realize you have this thing, they stay off the feeder. Worked for us.

ReplyDeleteLol! I say give up on trying to out-smart them and just enjoy their antics. It's like having your own little acrobatic troupe outside of your window.
