Niece's first quilt, quilting finally......
My great-niece stopped by last night to show me her first quilt. She said she was the only one in the class that chose batiks to work with. I was very impressed with her choices. She was lucky to have a talented quilter for her teacher too. I recognized her name and have heard a lot of good things about her.
I finally made some decisions about thread and how I wanted to quilt this quilt and got about a third of it done yesterday. I'm not a big fan of clear monofilament thread but with the number of color changes in the fabrics and the irregular width strips I decided it was the best choice. I am following the angle of each strip so as I go from one block into the next the angle sometimes changes midstream. This photo was taken by a window with natural light coming across the quilt. It has some distortion from diagonal quilting and will look much better after being steam pressed from the back when I am done.

Congrats to your niece! What a terrific first quilt! I totally agree about her choices of fabric too! Looks like she is a natural.... runs in the family, right?

Love your batik strip quilt. So many lovely batiks. Did you stitch in the ditch around the blocks first? Before following the angle of each strip like you said.
That's a nice quilt she made. Do you supposed she's genetically predisposed to loving batiks, like her Great Aunt? LOL
I love your strip quilt. I've been wondering if there's any way to avoid that pulling and bit of distortion one gets when quilting straight lines through blocks. Even with a walking foot, I get it, especially at seams. Bugs the heck out of me. Glad you're back at the long arm again. Have fun.
I think any quilt made from Batiks is predestined to be beautiful, and the one made by your niece is no exception!

Your niece's FIRST quilt is amazing ! Can you imagine what she will produce as she continues quilting through the years ? Hope she entered it in the Fair.
Your piece you are working on looks great, I love the texture that shows up on the screen. I see lots of quilting time in this one. And know it will look wonderful when complete.

I like your great-niece's choice of fabrics. Creativity and colour selection must run in the family.
I've never used monofilament and I've heard it's tricky but it does seem to be the right choice in this case!
