Another productive day............

I sewed the binding all by machine on this quilt.  I figured it will either be a baby quilt or lap quilt for someone and therefore will be washed often and get a lot of wear and tear.

On the zig zag I am doing a hand finished binding.  I decided it is going to be a wallhanging for my main level studio (yes, I have 2 studios).  I got one side hand stitched and about 10" on a second side.

Next on my agenda was sewing the borders onto this queen sized Trip Around the World quilt made with all Kaffe Fassett fabrics.  Here is another post on this quilt, Nov. 2007.  I cut the borders in April this year and now they are on the quilt top.  When I measured it last night to figure out the backing I decided it is too long.  I may trim 4" off one of the end borders which will be the top border when it is on a bed.  The top measures 96" x 117" right now.  I know a lot of sources say a queen size quilt is about 83" x 93" but that wouldn't even cover the sheets and blankets with the thick mattresses today.

I like mine to be somewhere between a coverlet and a bedspread.  I don't like dust ruffles so I make my quilts with a 17-18" drop so they end below the bed frame.  I hope to get the backing fabric cut and pieced today and loaded on my midarm quilting machine, and maybe even get it quilted.  I know that sounds ambitious but the QOV group meets next Tuesday and I have to start working on preparations for that by Sunday afternoon.

My 500,000th visitor may be here late today or early tomorrow morning.  I'll see if I can identify where they are from on sitemeter.

  5. Oh how I could be the sweeper in your sewing studio. I so covet your Kaffe collection. You have such a huge diversity and I love every quilt you show us. There is no way I could ever collect such a gorgeous collection of fabric. I compliment you on your generosity to your charities. I hope they know how special they are. You are their jewel in the crown. Great job. congrads on hitting half million. Hilary

  7. Beautiful work! Thank you, as always, for sharing it. Every day, even!

I would love to see a tutorial on how you do binding all by machine. The only way I know is to attach it to the front by machine, and finish it on the back by hand.

If I could make a binding reasonably presentable, all by machine, I would make more pot holders, for starters, and we need some!

  8. I have a deep mattress also and my queen size quilts tend to be wider and longer than some are. I know the queen size batts never fit my quilts and the king size are too large - but I get the king size and cut them down a little. The quilts all look so good and I love the batik fabrics.

  11. 500,000 visitors! Wow! That's great! I understand, though, with the beautiful work you do! I like long quilts, spreads, etc... on beds, too. None of mine are long enough.

  15. That was fabulous progress!!! I am impressed. I agree with you that it is nice to have the extra length on the quilts to avoid dust ruffles.

  16. Great quilts - I like finifshing binding on my machine, I just wish I were better at it. I did it on our picnicquilt, and it worked out ok. It is just soooooo much faster than hand stitching binding!

  17. I'm dropping by late on the off chance I could hit 500,000. Knowing my luck, I'll be 499,999. *S*

I like the way you work on different projects at the same time.

  18. Yes, the beds need to be measured if I'm making a quilt for a specific bed, I've got some that don't even fit my double bed. I love the quilting on the zigzag, looks like a variegated thread?? 500K visitors, whoohoo!

  19. You are putting me to shame with all your finishes. So do you do different things in your two studios? I have a three room studio and each room has a different purpose.

  20. Getting closer...I'm 499,986. I do a machine binding that you can not see stitches from the front at all. I use it on all wall hangings, table toppers and baby quilts.

  22. I'm kinda jealous of your two studios (and that long arm quilter!), but then the beauty of living alone means my entire living room is my quilting studio, my linen cabinet is devoted to crafts, and I've even got a big plastic bin of batting in my bedroom.
