Triangles and backyard visitors

I did get some more triangles cut and finished the green row.  I switched the green row and the light blue row and I'm not sure I like the green next to the gold any more than I like the blue one there.  All of the loose triangles at the bottom are ones that don't fit any color or value range right now.

I saw some robins yesterday but wasn't quick enough to get a picture of one.  I did catch this pretty guy at the suet cage though.  If you look to the background you can see a squirrel sitting on a log.

The cardinal has been brave and shows up every morning now and dares the squirrels to tell him to leave.  The female sits in the tree and waits her turn.

  1. The quilt is looking great!! I just love bird watching. That is one beautiful woodpecker. They always have fascinated me. We used to put bird food out in the spring and summer, but don't anymore. The bear population around here has increased significantly and we just can't risk it. We have had them in our backyard before, and you just never know when they are going to come. But if they know that there is a food source to be had, they will keep coming.

  2. We have a woodpecker like that who visits our feeder block. I think he is a yellow bellied sap sucker. I think they are so pretty!

  3. I just love to see your birds and squirrels that came to visit you. Our visitors are very different to yours. Have actually put some on my post.

  4. Wanda, Try switching the gold row with the row above it. At least the way it looks on the computer, there isn't as much contrast between the third and forth rows from the bottom.
There have been these crazy woodpeckers at my house. I have not been able to get a picture of them. They are black with white edging on their wings, they have bright red heads, and they are big! One was pecking on my rotting deck and I could hear it through the whole house.

  5. I so enjoy birds at our feeder...and in another few weeks, the first hummingbirds will be in our area. Thanks for sharing your critters with us. I like your quilt top...as always.

  6. How about swapping the gold with the brown ? Or the dark green with the gold and move the brown down ? Just play with it, you will find one you like.

  7. I've been 'row swapping' in my mind. I think I would move the gold row to be just above the brown row. Interesting, just moving one row changes the entire tone of the quilt.

Love the nature pictures. We have a new 'robin-sized' brilliant blue bird (not a bluejay or NC blue bird) with a red chest that we can't identify. Also can't get close enough to get a picture. Love to watch the birds.

  8. I hadn't put any seed in my feeder for awhile now, I had so many birds and squirrels in the area that I have had it at all winter that they ruined a flower bed - the squirrels kept tracking through for all the seed the birds scattered - it might have been more than squirrels the way the flower bed has been so dug into. I need to move it.

  9. I love watching your triangle quilt evolve. Glad I don't have to make those colour decisions. I have spent the past couple of days outside in the garden. Been doing a bit of cleaning up of last year's growth. A couple of mourning doves kept me company, while a downy woodpecker hammered at the elm tree and two black squirrels cavorted in my flower beds. I saw my first robin of the season last Sunday. I love spring! But doesn't everyone?

  10. I heard a robin yesterday although I couldn't see it. Hearing or seeing the first robin of the year is always exciting. We usually have a red-headed woodpecker who hangs around on the roof garden but he doesn't show up until May. Although this year, who knows? Maybe he'll show up sooner.

  11. I can really see where color value is important as you try to sort it out, even more so than the color itself.

Love all of your backyard friends.

  12. Sorry Gene that is a Red-bellied woodpecker.
Its spring what great pictures....I do love the way the cardinals look out for each other...have you seen the male feeding the female yet?
A family of baby cardinals is on the way!

    Love your zig zag quilt.....
you sure know how to use color!

    Happy sewing

  13. I would put a purple row in between the green and gold.

PS I saw my first baby squirrel yesterday! Seems early, but there it was running along our fence.

  15. we are 6 weeks ahead of ourselves but it looks like the north wind is swinging back and with the whitestuff that will cover the brown stuff so I don't have to think about the dandelions quite yet. I also have a top almost done then half ends up on the floor as I rearrange things. 8^) Perhaps you need another brighter row, possibly between those lower rows.

  16. You have a lot of patience to keep cutting and arranging. I love it!

  17. I love to see the birds visiting our feeders. I used to enjoy squirrels, too, but one year they decided to take one bite out of every ripe red tomato in our garden. It's been enemy status for them ever since!

  18. Nice woodpecker picture! I have hairy and downy woodpeckers at my suet. The male and female hairys were in the yard the other day. Last spring they did a courting dance around the tree trunks. I hope I see that again.
