After the eye appointment

While I waited for my dilated eyes to return to normal.......
I sorted through more things in the basement. I found another class project that I started at least 8-9 years ago. I guess I need to put it on the daily schedule for one day and finish it and donate it or gift it.
It is the double pinwheel blocks from this Eleanor book.
There is a pile of sewn segments.
A pile of strips sewn together.
There are even more strips cut for this. I must have been planning to make a large quilt. Since the green pinwheels revolve in the opposite direction from the purple ones, you can make 2 separate quilts or one color is used for the center and the other for the border blocks.
My dad called me last night and said he wanted to call off the surgery. I told him I thought he made the right decision. He had told my brother that he had pain but he admitted to me that there is no pain. I suggested an elastic support but he said no he was fine without one. There were a lot of people praying for him to make the right decision. This is a HUGE load off of me and I can breathe again. I didn't want to have to make the decision for him and then live with the guilt if I had been wrong.
I want to thank all of you out there in blogland for your support, your comments and emails, your prayers and good thoughts. It was good to hear all of the stories and similar circumstances and encouragement.

  1. Glad to hear that your Dad will be spared. Sometimes, attempts to resolve a minor problem cause larger problems. Praying for the right solution and be confident seems to be the best we can do.

  2. So good to hear that things are resolved for your Dad. I am sure your mind is much more at ease now and that is a good feeling. Hope your Dad continues to do well.

The Double Pinwheel is one of my favorite quilts. I taught that class from Eleanor's book several times at the LQS. Such a great pattern and quite easy to complete. In fact, I have a picture on my left sidebar of one that I made as a shop sample about 4 years ago, all from Kaffe fabrics. I had made a king size done in all 30s repro fabrics and won 1st place in a quilt show. I really like that version too.

  5. I'm glad to hear that your father made up his mind on his own and you didn't need to. Sometimes by an old age you decide you just do not want any more treatment. My mom is of that mind if breast cancer returns. She has had treatment 2 times she says if it comes back again (she is 84 and not healthy) that she won't treat it again.

The quilt is neat, amazing what old things we find that need to be finished.

  8. I love that purple fabric. I had it in turquoise, used it all up in this quilt:

  9. I like pinwheels and have enjoyed some Eleanor trunk shows with my quilting group. I love her quilts but find her patterns hard to follow. I know they are supposed to be so easy but my backwards brain just can't make sense of them.
So glad to hear of your dad's decision. Hope he continues to do well.

  10. I'm so glad he decided on no surgery. At his age they just don't do well being put to sleep. So glad that you didn't have to make that decision. I some fabric in my stash like the white background with purple flowers except mine are red flowers I think.

  16. Wanda,

I have wanted to leave a comment for so long now. However, my computer would not allow me to do so---that is until the 6th trip to the computer fix-it place. I am moved to tell you how much I enjoy your blog AND to tell you that I have learned so very much about the use of color. I have been told often that I have an eye for color, but I think this only occurs when "matchy-matchy" colors are involved. I study your quilts and your amazing use of color. I love the depth and movement and try to learn from your lovely work. I am afraid I am also an Exuberant Color addict as well. I work full time, love my flowers, and can be found in my sewing room everyday. Going to your blog is a daily occurrence, and I admit the day isn't quite right until I see what you are up to. Your committment to your blog and your willingness to share is commendable. Thank you. Does that make me an addict? I also am glad to hear that the decision concerning your father's health and his surgery has been resolved. It isn't easy, and I have experience concerning an elderly parent and making tough decisions like this. You have handled it all with such grace. Thank you again, and God Bless.

    Sincerely, Diane

  17. Wanda,
So glad to hear that your father chose not to have the surgery- it must be a huge relief for you all.
As for the pinwheel quilt- it is really lovely- you always choose the most beautiful color combinations.
Thanks for sharing your exuberant color- it always brightens my day..
    Regards,

  18. I am glad your dad decided against the surgery and that this has made life a bit easier for you. Those type of decisions are so hard.

On the quilting front, I love purple and green, and I do not have an Eleanor Burns pinwheel quilt. I was going to make one, but the group that was doing this never got it together. So, you could donate those blocks to a needy newly retired person, ME! I would be glad to exchange fabric with you. Of course, yours would be sewn together and mine would not be sewn together. Think of the fun you could have sewing it together!
