Here it is before sewing the last panel. The inset seams in the lower right were "lots of fun". It is like a jig saw puzzle, trying to figure it out. Here it is all sewn together and trimmed. It ended up about 29.25" x 30.5".
And here it is with one that I made over a year ago. The older one is more orderly with all of the strip sets in a vertical position. The new one is more chaos. A lot of people told me the first one reminded them of books on a shelf.
Now I have to decide if I want to border this one. I could do it in the same fabric as the first since I still have more of those fabrics. I think the title of the new one should be "Orderly Chaos" since all of the seams of the sections are cut at right angles to each other. The chaos is the little bits that aren't necessarily straight.
oh my i'm glad i came here today. this is fantastic. reminds me of the crowded shelves in an old used book store where things are a bit more topsy turvey. such interest and fun in this!
It does remind me of books with colourful dust jackets -- some lying on their sides, some leaning and some standing straight up. It is wonderful -- I think you're doing a library series!!
"Orderly Chaos" sure makes a fun piece to look at. Timeless pieces of fabrics that have come from other creations. So yes I agree I can see books in piles and all with a story to tell.
This is wonderful, Wanda -- such great color and line. I've been sorting my printed scraps this week, but I have a bin full of batik scraps, too and this is giving me ideas.... Keep scrappin' up the cool quilts!
I love it. It's even better than the other one. I can imagine that those last seams were quite a challenge! I'd say no border. Chaos, even the orderly kind, can't be contained.
How about an "off the wall" border! First use a small border like the previous one, but don't make it go all the way around, in one little spot piece in another bit of the small pieces, then add an outer border also made from small bits. The goal is to make it look like the center chaos just cannot be contained!
Those strips came out really nice. I personally would put a border on it. I think the border on the older piece makes it look more finished and professional. Such inspiration.
I really like your idea. I work in alot of batiks, and this is a great way to keep using all those wonderful fabrics. Since most of my pieces are brights, they will make nice gifts for Project Linus, as I like donating bright quilts to children who are sick.
Wowser! This one rocks. Very dynamic and so very scrappy. My favorite so far. Next most favorite is the one from the Material Obsession (I think) book. Fractured something-or-other.

ReplyDeleteGorgeous, Wanda. Indeed both of them make me think of books. The new one looks more like my bookshelf in the spare room. LOL. Orderly chaos it is!

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if I would put borders on it. I love it - and the title!
ReplyDeletethose are both wonderful! I'm undecided on the border question for the new one -- how about a photo with a border pinned up next to it?
ReplyDeleteHi Wanda,
ReplyDeleteI did not realize you intended to use these strips in the same piece. Wow.
Here are some names to consider if you are not already set:
Out of Chaos, Order
Entropy Squared
Contained Chaos
I, too, would like to see some border options. You know we love to give you advice.

ReplyDeleteWhat a fun quilt. Love all those colours.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great. I have to say I think I like the bookshelves one better though, I like a little order with my chaos.
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog and I love your quilts.

Love your improvisation. Gives me more ideas. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI agree with the library quilt idea--looks like you have a theme going on here.
ReplyDeleteI really like this!
ReplyDeleteIt would be really fun on your new one to have some pieces continue beyond the edge to continue the irregular feel, and then bind with no border.
ReplyDeleteFantastic! I have a new strip love. I vote no borders, if you are asking.
