Female has 2 forms: one yellow like the male and the other black with shadows of dark stripes. Hindwing of both female forms has a row of striking blue chevrons and an iridescent blue wash over parts of the interior hindwing. The upperside hindwing has a prominent orange marginal spot that is generally larger than the row of pale marginal spots. On the underside of forewing of spring individuals the row of marginal spots may be merged into a continuous band, thus appearing similar to the Canadian Tiger Swallowtail." In Iowa these are the swallowtails we see most, I think, so I thought Illinois may, also.<br />Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4049103935243328127.post-24676651860084163322016-08-15T23:20:36.177-05:002016-08-15T23:20:36.177-05:00What a beautiful visitor! What a beautiful visitor!Paigehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09165119758309263620noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4049103935243328127.post-20698997668099337722016-08-10T20:38:01.625-05:002016-08-10T20:38:01.625-05:00It IS a pretty one. They do love the zinnias and these tall flowers that jumped the fence into our yard (purple heads). My trumpet vine on the deck gets lots of visits from the hummers as do the feeders I put up. Lots of activity. Have you ever noticed how the hummers "chirp" when they're near? I can always tell when one is hovering about.Lola Carrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16964734340892765024noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4049103935243328127.post-49396867430716415172016-08-10T07:07:22.405-05:002016-08-10T07:07:22.405-05:00Butterflies look great on your zinnias! The zinnias that came up on their own from last year's seeds have come along nicely. I will not post a picture because my flower beds are a mess! The weeds are out of control and I don't have the time to go and pull them until after I get the AC/DC and Harley quilts done. The butterflies and hummingbirds don't mind the weeds.
