More auditions.......

My first audition was blue.  I thought maybe it would look good next to the gold cornerstones and contrast well with the stripes.  No, this isn't it.

The next audition was light.  Hmm....let's see that one closer.......  I knew I liked a dotty look since I liked the two that I tried 2 days ago.

It is creamier than it shows in the photo although the taupe beige in the background is pretty close.  This is tree rings by Martha Negley, another Westminster/Rowan designer.

Yes, this is the look I was after.  So many of the other fabrics that I auditioned made the quilt so dark, and to me it was bright summer and needed to be light.  I sewed the borders on last night.  It looks so much better than the photo.  I hope I can get a daylight photo of it soon.  I had it hanging sideways on the design wall and rotated the photo so it really isn't shorter on the left side, just the camera's perspective.  It is about 64" x 78" now.

Perfect! Great choice.
When I first found your blog I was inspired by one of the less complex KF quilts and made one as a charity quilt. For some reason I didn't give it away because it just kept smiling at me. This summer I've been having chemo and use it as my lap quilt. I'm so glad that I kept it! I've had so many compliments on it and I made 2 for other patients. Thanks for your inspiration. I'm usually attracted to the CW repro fabrics so KF is some change for me.

Four finishes for August is great! The border fabric is very cool fabric. I see what you mean about some of the other prints you auditioned made the quilt so dark.

I love seeing what a difference the borders make and I love the final choice. I was excited to see one of your quilts in The Quilt Life when I was reading it this morning!

Just goes to show me that you need to keep on trying until you get it right/how you want it. I love the light border, it does make the quilt look summery! This has been fascinating, I have so enjoyed seeing the different borders being auditioned.

I would not have considered this border fabric, but now I see that it is perfect. Another beautiful finish.

I am encouraged that you take time and tries to get your borders. I find it takes a lot of auditions, but the right one seems to always emerge. That is a great border for the quilt. It just works! This will keep me going and not be discouraged.

Beautiful finishes for August... You are truly a magician in your profession.

What a lovely surprise for the border ! (todays post) I agree with your decision, it just sparkles now.

I do like the lighter border, gives the impression that the centre is slightly floating.

I did like the dotty fabrics that you showed the other day. They broke up the stripes designs in all the sashing. I really like this border fabric in the lighter tone. Glad you finished some things for the month.

Definitely a surprise! Now I can't wait to see what you do for binding. I would never have chosen something this light for the border. I see what you're saying about making the quilt lighter and more of a bright summer quilt, and it certainly does that. I also really like the dotty aspect. But I still feel like there's no end to the quilt, it just sort of floats on top of the borders which themselves are kind of vague. IMHO you will need a strong or darker binding to somehow stop the quilt, because right now it feels like it just fizzles out. It's absolutely beautiful, don't get me wrong, I just don't feel like the very light borders perform their border function of saying, this is where this quilt ends.

Thanks for sharing all the fabrics your auditioned for the borders. Glad you persisted because the gray/taupe border lets the center pop.

I went to the IL State Museum gallery in Lockport on Friday to see the Civil War quilts exhibit. I encourage you to go to see it! It will be up through October 17.
