Binding on 3 sides, and a question...

I have the binding hand sewn on 3 sides and I really like it.  I think of this as a wallhanging, 60" square.  I usually sew my hanging sleeve on the top edge before I hand sew the binding on that edge, catching the raw edges of the hanging sleeve under the binding.  Now my question for you:  If you were purchasing this piece, would you be thinking of it as a lap quilt and want to remove a temporary hanging sleeve, or would you be purchasing it as a wallhanging (which could have a permanent sleeve sewn into the bound edge).  A full shot of this quilt is here.  I have to have a hanging sleeve on all of the quilts for my gallery show so some will be temporary, some permanent.

I have 12 foot ceilings (I have clips, so I don't add hanging sleeves.) so I would like the either option. AKA I'd use a couch throw with a hanging sleeve.

I agree. I would use it as a lap robe and also a wall hanging. Is it going to be displayed or on a table when the show goes on?? Sometimes the way it is displayed at a show will suggest it's use. Chris

I would use that size as a lap quilt. And I would take the sleeve off the back.

I probably would use it either way, so I would leave the sleeve on the back. Plus having a sleeve on doesn't mean you can't use it as a lap, it just means that it is ready to hang when you are done using it as a lap quilt.

I would use it as a wall hanging. I like my lap quilts a little more generous. Either way it is a beautiful piece of "art". All your pieces are beautiful.

60" square is a nice size for a lap quilt. However, the colors are too beautiful not to have in hanging on the wall for all to admire!

This would be beautiful as a wall hanging, but it may be that not all your potential buyers have that big a space on their wall. I would opt for a temporary sleeve.

I think I would opt for a removable sleeve as well.

The permanent sleeve with coordinating brights would be a fine option. I have a sixty inch square quilt that has a sleeve and it doesn't interfere with using it as a throw. In fact I like it arranged diagonally over the bed.

I put a sleeve on every quilt I make, from 12" little quilts to king size. It is simply part of my binding process, as you described. I use the same fabric as the back so it is hardly noticeable.

I'm always cold so I currently use all quilts for warmth but I like the idea of having the hanging sleeve there so if I wanted to hang it I could.

Make the sleeve temporary - The quilt is large enough that some people couldn't hang it without it taking over their home.

I suspect most people will consider this "art" rather than a "quilt" and may want to hang it...particularly since they will see it hung. However, if I were in charge of the world, I'd make a 'removable" sleeve and then make the point that this can be hung or the sleeve can be removed if the quilt is going to be used for snuggling. Can't see how you'd go wrong with that.

Love watching the "exhibit" unfold....Jan

I'm with the "put a temporary sleeve on the quilt" people. You have the most versatility that way. Having said that, I'm using a quilt on my bed right now that has a permanent sleeve on it. I don't think having a sleeve on a quilt precludes it from being used as a lap or bed quilt.
Btw, the quilt is GORGEOUS!

This is a piece of art! I would never use it as a lap quilt.

I would love it on the wall, it is such a beautiful piece. I sew sleeves into the binding of most of my quilts, including bed quilts and it doesn't bother me when I use them. I don't even know it's there.

The majority of quilts I make are for use---so I would make the sleeve temporary. Once it is sold, it belongs to the person and it is thoughtful of the artist to create easy options.

I agree with those who say put on a permanent sleeve, coordinating with the back. I use a lap quilt with a sleeve and never notice it.

I have sleeves on all of my quilts, sometimes using them as lap quilts, and the sleeve doesn't bother me or anybody else. But a removeable sleeve would give someone an easy option to remove it, I guess. By the way, very pretty! Love the dotty binding!

I'd want the option to use it as both. It's so gorgeous I can imagine it as a focal point on a wall but, at that size, it would also be fabulous to use as a lap quilt at times. I don't think a permanent sleeve would bother anyone! I love how that binding looks!

I like for my quilts to be versatile in their use so I put sleeves on all but the kingsized (no walls big enough here to hang those). I don't see why anyone would be bothered by a sleeve on a lap quilt.

I guess my thought would be that the person purchasing it may not be from the "quilt world".

They may appreciate the "hanging sleeve" as an option for hanging their quilt (especially if they see it hung that way at the show) or they may choose to hang it in an entirely different way once they get home.

They may also choose to use the quilt, as a quilt with the hanging sleeve still attached thinking that it is like those tags on the mattress and pillows....that someone is going to come and get them if they remove it. :) Or, they might cut it off, because they are thinking, what is this thing and why is it on here?

So, having said all of that? I would make it temporary - not sewn into the binding.

Just my two cents worth. :)

Oh Oh....I would use it as a wall hanging....yes, please! I'm sooo glad you asked how I would like it!!
HA! I would take this quilt in a New York minute!!!

If the quilt in question is actually big enough to be used as a lap quilt, I'd prefer being able to remove the sleeve.

PS This comment was accidentally made on a posting from earlier in Feb, please ignore it...Feedly took me to the wrong place.

I would prefer a temporary hanging sleeve, so I would have options. ...and I agree about the Google words --- they approach impossible!!

I would do a permanent having sleeve. I do mine the same as you and I don't think having the sleeve on the back interferes at all. It's gorgeous as are all your quilts!

Char said...

I would use it as a lap quilt but the sleeve would not be a problem.

Quiltdivajulie said...

Unless I had a perfect spot to hang a 60" square quilt, I would most likely remove the sleeve and use the quilt on the couch.

Pat said...

I would use both ways to I would make a permanent sleeve on it. Even used as a lap quilt the sleeve would not be in the way and that also gives the option as to which way you want to use it when. But I am a Gemini and I do like to change things. LOL Now are you totally confused as to what to do after all the input? LOL

Kristin said...

I would attach the permanent sleeve. That will make it more versatile - one could use it either way. Or alternate between hanging it and using it as a lap quilt.

Just luscious to look at and I would hang it to display. I agree with 'Kristin' (commenter just before me), adding a permanent sleeve, would be an additional selling bonus.

I'm a lap quilt user. Having a sleeve on wouldn't matter to me. This way the next owner could choose how he/she wants to use it. Of course, if it was your quilt that I would receive, there would be no other owner! :)
Love all your quilts!!!

I always do my sleeves the permanent way you describe. And for the longest time I put a sleeve on every quilt, just in case. Go for it.

I would use it as a wallhanging so it would need the sleeve. It's gorgeous and would really stand out used on the wall.

I make mostly bed sized quilts, but always put a hanging sleeve on them so people can hang them if they want. I have had people buy my quilts to hang them, also it is convenient when you do shows, or are just trying to photograph the quilt. Right now I have a quilt on my bed that has a permanent sleeve, which I don't even notice. Your quilt is really beautiful. I am really enjoying see your quilts come together.
