Questions about printer fabric.....

There were lots of questions about printer fabric this morning.  It is called Inkjet printable fabric (not label fabric).  You can use if for any photos you want to print, also labels that you type into a word document.   You will have to find the one you like best through trial and error.  My favorite may not be your favorite.  I have ordered another brand that I had never heard of but it was recommended by a reader.  EQ also makes printer fabric and I hear it is good but I think the most expensive.  The one on the front of the pile prints with the most vivid colors but is the stiffest and hard to sew through by hand.  The middle one is OK, not as vivid but OK.  The bottom one prints OK but it was almost impossible to get the paper backing off in one piece or even 4 pieces.  Then I experimented and found that if I ironed the paper side with a warm iron it peeled off in one piece (not in their directions however).  All three are rinsed in water to get the excess ink off and/or to make them colorfast.
I scanned real leaves and printed them on printer fabric for this piece.
On this Journal Quilt for September 2008 I printed a photo I had taken.

Thanks Wanda. I suppose we should have asked what type printer you have also. Does it use a pigment ink? (or do you know?)

I love EQ cotton lawn printer fabric. I have tried many and find it does the best for me.

What a great idea for that journal cover! I've never used fabri made for printing labels, as I really like making pieced ones, but now I'm intrigued enough to give it a try!

I have wondered about printer fabric does it hold up good in the wash? I had some labels made at spoonfly and was wondering if their was other ways to do it.

Has Printed Treasures changed? I have not used it for a few years but I always liked that one best because it was the one product that was colorfast, machine wash/dry and required no water, ironing or mess to use the product. You simply print, peel, sew.

Thanks for sharing. It's always nice to discover what works for other folks.

I've used the printer fabrics for tons of labels but have never rinsed them. Guess I should read the instructions, huh? LOL Loved the way you did the leaves--neat idea!

I have found that most of the packaged printer fabric is very dense and difficult to hand sew onto the quilt back. The softest that I have found is the EQ Printables Premium cotton lawm, but it is very dear. I've experimented with ironing a piece of premium muslin (Southern Belle, by Springs) onto a sheet of freezer paper and running that through my printer. Not always successful going through my printer, but when it works the results are good and the label has a very soft hand.

Thank you for sharing the info on the printing products. I have some Printed Treasures but have not used it yet.

Thanks, Wanda! I appreciate the way you compared the merits of each product. This was helpful.

Have you ever tried making your own printer fabric with Bubble Jet Set? I love that stuff and the cost is way lower than all the other stuff on the market. I do have to say that colors need to be adjusted on some prints to get the best results. I have bought a book on how to do so, but haven't done it yet! :-)
