A good sewing day........

It was still hot and humid yesterday so I had a good inside day and sewed.  I did the 2 stars and more triangle squares at night but I worked on another of the Jelly Roll Race quilts earlier in the day.  Let me clear up that I would never make one out of a Jelly Roll; that is just the name that got tacked onto the procedure.  I prefer cutting strips from my own fabrics for my projects.  I also prefer a straight seam for the joining which resembles hardwood floor planks (like I did in the one I showed yesterday) rather than the diagonal seam suggested in the video. The one I worked on today is made of 73 three inch wide strips with a spacer block sewn between the 45" strips.  It is all floral fabrics and the spacer is green.  I sewed the spacers onto every strip, sewed the strips into one big long strip and then sewed the first seam.  That took 2 hours and 10 minutes.  Now I have 4 more seams to sew at the sew in today.  Hopefully I'll have a photo for you tomorrow.  It should finish at about 80" x 103".

So far I am just working with strips that I had cut previously that were stored in plastic boxes.  I have 2 empty boxes now.  I have many full boxes of strips of various types of fabric....

In the winter I long for snow days, which we don't have very often, but hot summer days are almost the same. With temps in NC in the upper 90s there is not much going outside if you don't have to. I am sewing up a storm myself.

Of course you wouldn't use jelly rolls! Isn't it great to empty out the boxes? I love the stars.

I wasn't "gonna" but you made me look at Jelly Roll Race. Now I wonder how they would look if your lined up all of the diagonals...

I have a Kaffe Jelly roll, that has been patiently waiting for me to cut squares for it to border for far too long...

I really liked the 'jelly roll' quilt that you showed yesterday. I'm thinking that I should gather up my strips and get started on this project. Thanks for sharing.

I really like the idea of spacers between the strips. I had been thinking of doing that if I do another one of these.

I like it! Our group at church just finished Quilt Camp with the teens. We used 2 1/2 strips and have many left over. I think this would be a fun way to use them up and maybe even cut some more strips from our donated fabric.

Your star blocks are like 'little quilts' in themselves. So pretty.

I too am anxious to see your ' jelly roll' piece I know it will be as "exuberant" as what you showed yesterday.

I know you have had years of practice but what you can do in 2 hours 10 minutes always amazes me.

I love your stars. I'm making triangles now, too. Mime are more free form - color wise. The Jelly Roll I did was also not from a Jelly Roll, but from fabric sent to me by Sheila of Cook Sew Travel. She made the fabric strips from her stash, and sent them as her Pay It Forward gift to me. I love it! Love yours, too. The light and darks are just right. You used various lengths, didn't you?

I am also making a jelly roll quilt out of scraps. I love on how fast they go together. I can't wait to see yours. At least today is cooler but it looks as if it will be cool for only a couple of days. Stay cool.

Ooo! I wonder if I will ever have enough left over strips to make a bed quilt? Right now, I wouldn't have enough to make a lap quilt!

I also did a practice run for a Jelly Roll Race. It was fun. I have another one I want to make with floral type fabrics. I like your friend's idea with the black and white fabric between the strip joinings. Quite effective. I like your stars.

I can't wait to see the Jelly Roll quilt you're working on -- it sounds fabulous with all florals.
Love your stars -- they're lovely!
